In January, 2010, the United States Supreme Court took a major step in destroying our democracy by declaring the 1984 newspeak doctrine that corporations are people when it said that corporations have free speech rights and can contribute as much money as they want for elections.
As we begin President's week today, it behooves all of us as Americans to work together to strengthen not weaken our democracy. There is an effort to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. You can learn more by clicking here.
We have seen money influence local politics with the slumlords trying to dissolve our Village government. The Giancursios and Websters who own millions of dollars of property in the Village have tried to eliminate local government so they can behave with even further lack of restraint to extract profits from the housing stock of the Village. Neighborhoods have been destroyed, housing values have decreased, and they have placed their candidate in the Mayor's office leading to the destruction of the Brockport Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the loss of an estimated 5 million dollars in assets of the fire department to a new layer of government, a fire district, manipulation of the code enforcement office, and almost the dissolution of the Village government, itself.
Money has always been in politics and too often politics is not about freedom and justice for all, but about money and power.
This President's week educate yourself about the roll of money in politics from the local level to the national and international level. Support the Village trustees in their efforts to better manage Village finances and enforce the laws, and support the passage of a constitutional amendment that takes away "personhood" from predatory corporations.
