King Street Stories - Lakeside shuts down, Holley Squirrel slam, Castaneda uses a bully pulpit, having guns in the house make it more likely you'll die from them, and Suzie gives her Valentine chocolate to the food shelf

Posted on 6:41 AM by Unknown

It’s been quite a week on King Street. After all the hoopla last year stirred up about the competition between Unity and Lakeside which led to the blossoming of “Support Lakeside” bumper stickers all over as if Lakeside were some sort of sports team being cheered on by its fans, the CFO, Jim Cummings,  announced that Lakeside would be closing its emergency department on April 15, and its inpatient beds on April 22. Lakeside has been badly mismanaged the last several years and finally called it quits and threw in the towel and the recriminations have reverberated around the area, but if anyone knows anything about the health care system in the United States this was an event waiting to happen sooner or later. In a rapidly changing health care delivery environment, a health care entity must either adapt and adjust or die, and Lakeside has been terminally ill for many years. Its passing is still sad, and Brockporters are grieving the loss of a significant community institution.

The barbarians in Holley engaged in their killing of squirrels which brought outrage and embarrassment to the people of the Brockport area because of the objections of the tree huggers around the state, the country, and the world. One report was that over 40,000 people signed on line petitions condemning the event and State Senator George Maziarz, who represents the people in this district, said to think of it like a fishing derby and maybe it won’t seem so decadent. The Holley Fire department said they haven’t been making enough money with their annual fireman’s carnival and so they had to come up with other fund raising events and killing squirrels was the best they could come up with. One woman said that going into the woods and killing animals is bonding time between parent and child when grown adults teach their children to imitate their murderous past time. Frank Benetucci said that it seemed sinful to kill animals just for the sport of it. “After all”, said Frank, “You don’t eat em, you don’t do anything with their pelts. Maybe you cut off their tails to display as some sort of trophy, but basically its just the blood thirsty thrill of the chase which involves a grown adult and maybe their kid with guns just killing animals for the hell of it. Holley has been known as the home of Neanderthals, red neck gomers, and degenerates,  but this is the icing on the cake. Now the whole world knows about the limited intelligence,  sensitivity and moral turpitude of Hollyites.”  How much of this low class stigma spills over on Brockporters remains to be seen.

Kevin’s in rehab and the amount of emergency vehicles stopping in front of his apartment house on King Street has significantly decreased in the last week. A fire truck, an ambulance, or a police car has not been called to the house in over a week now which is some sort of record. Americans love their beer and alcohol, and often times aren’t aware of the high costs their indulgence involves. Americans used to laugh at comedians like Foster Brooks who did foolish things while intoxicated. It’s not all that funny any more and Americans’ sensitivity to the suffering of people for whom alcohol creates significant health, financial, legal, and social problems has increased. The alcoholic behavior on King Street is significant every day of the week but especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Those who would like to dissolve the Brockport Police Department could make a more viable argument if they also would argue to turn Brockport into a dry community and remove all alcohol outlets within the Village limits.

Apparently, the Suburban News reporter, Kristina Gabalski, gave Mayor Connie Castaneda an exclusive interview and allowed the Mayor to use the Suburban News as her bully pulpit in the February 17th, 2013 edition. The Mayor rattled on about things like fire district taxes, the application for a grant to study village dissolution, and a referendum to dissolve the Brockport Police Department. Somebody claiming to be Keith Ryan, the Publisher of the Suburban News, made comments on The Brockporter defending Gabalski’s journalistic efforts and when his denial of partiality was met with scoff and derision said that he was being bullied and engaged in retreat. Whoever this person was, he also commented that people should not voice their opinions but run for political office as if this were the only way for anyone who cared about democracy to participate in their governance. One person opined that this article is the Mayor’s attempt to surface “trial balloons” of issues she can use when she runs again for Mayor this spring. In other words, some Brockporters think the campaign has already begun, and the question remains whether the Suburban News is knowingly colluding to support the mayor or did it get manipulated by a cunning politician? The person who says he is Keith threatened to call the F.B.I. if anyone misappropriates his identity, but there is no way to tell if the person making the threat to prosecute anyone stealing his identity as the Suburban News Publisher is, in fact, the Suburban News publisher. So, it is difficult from the vantage point of King Street to tell who is who and what is what and whether there is any truth at all in anything that Kristina Gabalski and Connie Castaneda come up with.

Research findings were disseminated this week that 30,000 Americans die from gun violence every year, 20,000 of which are suicide. Public health data indicates that having a gun in the house increases the likelihood that one of the occupants will die from gun violence as compared to occupants in homes without guns. The counter intuitive fact is that possession of guns make it more likely that the gun owner will die from gun violence not be protected from it. Smart people know this and want to limit access to guns while people who operate more from their amygdala than their frontal cortex obtain guns and raise the likelihood that they will die by them.

Suzie Capella got a box of chocolates from Bart Donovan for Valentines Day and at first was touched but then confused because she had told Bart that she was dieting trying to lose some of her 223 lbs. Suzie didn’t know whether to just say “thank you” or to throw them out. She decided to give them to the Brockport Food Shelf. She said she thought it was the loving thing to do.

And that’s the way things have been on King Street this week where the men went off killing little mammals for the fun of it, the women were crying over the closing down of Lakeside, and the kids were searching for dad’s keys to the gun safe to show their friends the Bush Master automatic rifle dad got for Valentine’s day from mom which can still shoot 10 rounds because she bought it before the new law took effect which dictates magazines are now limited to 7.

The King Street Stories - Mayor proposes dissolution again, Judge abruptly resigns, Superbowl provides excuse to indulge, and Greg Brown's prayers go unanswered

Posted on 6:51 AM by Unknown

It’s been quite a week on King Street. The students are back and classes have started for the Spring semester. The foot and car traffic has doubled and tripled on King Street especially on the warm January days when the temperature goes over 50.

Some of us are still grieving the death of former mayor, Jim Stull. He was a good man and is missed especially as Mayor Castaneda again proposes to get a grant for a study to determine the feasibility of dissolving the village. The woman seems to have a one track mind and will finish her service in Village politics singing this same swan song she has been singing for years. If the mayor didn’t have legal difficulties still pending in Ogden Town Court perhaps with Judge Coapman’s resignation  Supervisor Connors would make Connie a Judge.

The Ravens and the 49ers are in the Superbowl and the invitations to super bowl parties have been flying up and down the street. The Superbowl provides another excuse to over indulge in an attempt to chase the mid winter blues away. The Superbowl has become a major entertainment event, almost a holiday, in the United States given to excess and exceedingly entertaining marketing attempts to sell stuff to giddy viewers.

As Brockporters prepare to pay their taxes, significantly increased with the new fire district tax, Trustee Blair is reported in the minutes of the Village Board meeting to be wondering if he got lied to by Clarkson Supervisor Kimball about the possibility of Clarkson joining the Hamlin Fire District if Brockport didn’t turn over its millions of dollars in assets to the proposed Brockport Fire District. It may be that Trustee Blair and others will go to their graves wondering if they did the right thing for Brockport taxpayers in agreeing to participate in the creation of a whole new layer of government with the autocratic power to tax its citizens anything they like with no check and balance. Observers might wonder why, after the horse has left the barn, Trustee Blair now is wondering? Having to open up your check books and write a check does give one pause and makes one wonder.

It has dawned on people that the Village of Brockport election cycle is entering its pre-campaign phase as the elections for the 2013 – 2017 terms are held in June. The office of Mayor and two trustees are open. Rhett King, the leader of the dissolutionists, has been suggested as a Mayoral candidate. Some say, Margay Blackman has her eye on the position, and other people are considering what it would be like to be mayor of Brockport or a trustee.

Coleen’s café has re-furbished and is re-opened not only with a change in décor including new booths instead of tables, but also with a more cheerful service delivery.

Greg Brown, a self described born again Christian, complained this week that God was not answering his prayers and was stunned when his pastor told him that God was not ignoring him, God was saying “no”. Greg said this interpretation of events has lead to his losing his belief in God. “I just don’t understand a God who won’t give me what I want. I am not feeling loved, ya know? Who needs that?"

And that’s the way its been this week on King Street where  the men’s testosterone levels are rising in anticipation of Superbowl Sunday, all the women are imagining future political careers on the Village Board, and all the children want pancakes at Coleen’s café.

King Street Stories - guns, STDs, languishing court case, and the semester break

Posted on 4:00 AM by Unknown

It’s been a quiet week on King Street since the college is between semesters and the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night carousings are minimal. None the less there has been some disorder as Kevin reported that Marshall got the snot beat out of him last weekend in front of the Stoneyard grill by the canal by a bunch of Puerto Ricans. Kevin isn’t always the most reliable source, but gossip about Marshall’s other antics make the story somewhat believable. The part about the Puerto Ricans doesn’t ring quite true though because there don’t seem to be a lot of Puerto Ricans in Brockport.
According to reports left in the comment section on The Brockporter a bunch of insecure Brockporters have rushed out to buy their Bushmasters and ammo for reasons that aren’t clear to more mentally healthy people, but those in the paranoid, tweaker fringe seem to think that guns are necessary to provide some sense of security in their threatening world. While the State government passed some stricter gun legislation with the exception of Brockport’s representatives, Senator Maziarz and Assemblyman Hawley, the legislators decided to keep it secret who the people are who have these guns. Apparently about 40% of Americans have guns. How many there are on King Street and surrounding blocks is unclear. With the drunken, rowdy behavior it’s a scary thought to think that some of these folks have lethal weapons in their houses. At 46 King Street there have been two home invasions in the last year, but the home owner there has no guns so the intruders are lucky they chose a pacifist to invade.
Not watching much TV, it was delightful to catch Betty White’s Off Their Rockers and notice in between segments that some old folks were hanging banners off an expressway overpass that read “STD free since 1975.” I didn’t catch it at first, but when it sank in, I laughed heartily, and then realized that I have never had an STD. Is this a good thing or the sign of a sheltered life? I don’t know how many STDs there are on King Street, but knowing that 1/3 of sexually active high school females have Chlamydia I would guess that the STDs on King Street are near epidemic proportions.
The Mayor’s case of Official Misconduct got postponed again until February, 2013. Having been arrested last March, 2012, Mayor Castaneda must be making her lawyer rich stringing out this adjudication almost a year and close to the end of her term which expires in June, 2013. Judge David Murante in the Ogden Town Court must be a most patient man to allow this case to meander through his court docket. Most folks seem to agree that Brockport deserved much better mayoral leadership than it has gotten the last 8 years from Castaneda and for 8 years before that from her mentor Mort Wexler. Between the two of them, they almost bankrupted the village and brought it to the brink of dissolution due to the advocacy of the slumlord cabal. The trustees: Hunsinger, Blair, Hanna, Blackman and Andrews have brought the village back from death’s door to some semblance of health. What will happen to the mayor at this point seems moot since she has done about all the harm she can do during her term of office as it winds down to expiration.
The white guys in Brockport are still licking their wounds and buying their guns now that Romney has been defeated and the Muslin Kenyan is back in the white house for a second term. Maziarz and Hawley are the last remnants of the privileged white guys before the young women of color take over in Western New York. Even though it’s getting hotter, and we love our fracked gas, times they are a changing as the days of the privileged white male are over which spreads hope for the more progressive minded along the Erie Canal.
And that’s how it’s been this week in Brockport where the white guys are scrambling to get their guns, the women who are better educated and more intelligent are slowly taking over, and the children are having to transform the messed up world they have been left so they can survive into the next century.
