Brockport, N.Y. - The University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong West campus and Strong Urgent Care opened its doors, Tuesday. It’s located in the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital at 156 West Avenue in Brockport that closed in April. “It looks a little different, but it still feels like home,” said Lianna Gates, a registered nurse who worked at Lakeside for seven years and who just started at URMC Strong West. “It is amazing,” said Gates when asked what it was like to be back in the same building. "Just the opportunity to be here and it's a privilege just to be able to provide these services to the community.” Those services include an urgent care, treating non-life-threatening issues such as sprains, broken bones, cuts, fevers and ear infections. Strong Urgent Care will offer on-the-spot diagnostic services such as X-rays, EKGs and strep tests. “[We are] looking in the coming months to expand services in the hospital as well with some subspecialty services as well as same day surgery services coming down the line,” said Dr. Michael Kamali Chair Department of Emergency Medicine URMC. They have applied with the state to upgrade form an urgent care to a full emergency department, according to Dr. Kamali. “I think it's very important. One, the hours of operation running 24 hours a day are crucial to patients in need. Two, with a free standing E.D. you have all sorts of services available to you within that E.D.” The goal is to have Strong West be an emergency department by January 2014. The urgent care will be open seven days a week from noon to 7p.m.
