Kurt Vonnegut in his novel, Cat's Cradle, invents the religion of Bokononism. Bokononism amounts to a collection of "foma" - harmless untruths - aimed at exposing the futility of our delusions of power, reminding us of webs of connection in the most unlikely places.
According to Gregory Sumner, the author of "Unstuck In Time: A Journey Through Kurt Vonnegut's Life and Novels", referring to Bokononism, he writes, "At its core it is a distillation of Vonnegutian humanism, "Live by the foma that make you brave and kind and healthy and happy." p. 84
Most religious belief is foma, nothing more than mythic superstitions which explain our experience, provide us a sense of meaning, and hopefully make us feel better, safer, reassured, hopeful, and maybe kinder. Does your religious belief do that for you?
