The U.S. is only one of of four countries in the developed world along with China, Iran, North Korea, and Yemen that sill use the death penalty.

Us, Americans, like to think of ourselves as exceptional people, in the richest, most powerful country on earth, but spiritually we are still quite primitive and barbaric and are looked upon often by other countries as backward and perverse. The death penalty is one of those symptoms of U.S. dysfunction which leaves other countries appalled.

After 9/11, the meme often used was "Why do they hate us?" Here, might be part of the answer.
