A 26 year old Hamlin NY man was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Third Degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (both Misdemeanors), as well as other traffic-related offenses. He is due in Sweden Town Court.

The Brockporter Thought For The Day - Another side of the story about Lakeside

In response to your article about breast pumps - I can't believe you are holding a 40 year-old grudge.

I will take at least partial credit for the fact that ~ 25 years ago Lakeside became a nationally recognized "Baby Friendly" hospital for promoting breast feeding.  While I was the first at Lakeside to do deliveries in the labor room, long before the renovations of the OB suite did away with the OR-based delivery rooms, most babies were delivered in bed rather than on a sterile table up in stirrups.

Over the years, I was joined by other Family Physicians and a number of midwives who, along with increasingly modern Obstetricians, practiced humane, family-centered obstetrics.  The Lakeside OB unit won a national award for quality.  I am extremely proud of the professional nurses who supported me and the laboring patients.

I am sure I could get a couple-hundred testimonials to the loving way my patients were treated as they delivered at Lakeside over the last 30 years.

It is attitudes like yours -- refusing to acknowledge growth, change, and improvement -- that have led to the slow destruction of a noble and worth-while community institution.

Police arrested Patrick S. Keyes, 23 years old, of Bayport NY for Second Degree and Third Degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, both Misdemeanors, as well as other traffic-related offenses. Keyes is due to appear in Sweden Town Court.

February 21^st, 2013

Police arrested Jeremy D. Schreiner, 22 years old, of Hamlin, NY for Second Degree Obstructing Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest as well as other offenses stemming from a traffic stop. Schreiner is due to appear in Sweden Town Court.

February 24^th, 2013

Devin R. Goodenough, 26 years old, of Hamlin NY was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Third Degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (both Misdemeanors), as well as other traffic-related offenses. Goodenough is due in Sweden Town Court.

The Brockport Police responded to 382 calls for service from February 18^th, 2013 through February 24^th, 2013 with 2,615 calls to date.

The Brockporter Health Care Sunday - When drinking energy drinks leads to the emergency room

From The Week 02/08/13:

The number of people admitted to emergency rooms after drinking energy drinks has skyrocketed in recent years. A new federal report shows that in 2011, more than 20,000 people were admitted to the ER with anxiety, rapid heartbeat, seizures, or heart attacks seemingly caused by downing the drinks—more than twice the number from four years earlier. The Federal Drug Administration is also investigating 18 deaths possibly tied to the highly caffeinated beverages. Most patients who seek help after consuming the drinks—which include Monster, Red Bull, and Rockstar—are children and teens.

Sunday Sermon - Knowing when to quit

Sometimes you just need to quit, cash it in, pull the plug, say goodbye. People try to help saying, "Hang in there," "Don't give up", "Quitters never win and winners never quit," "Eventually persistence pays off,", but has Kenny Rogers sang many years ago in his great song, The Gambler, "ya gotta know when to hold em, and know when to fold em"

There is a good article in the Jan/Feb, 2013 issue of Spirituality and Health entitled "The Joy Of Quitting" by Cash Peters.

Peters writes:

"For two decades, I was one of those people who pursued, as Carolyn Myss puts it, 'a dream that does not belong to them.' Eventually, it put me in the hospital. That's when I knew: I needed an urgent course correction before it was too late. So I quit."

Peters quotes Alan Cohen who wrote "Integrity is the condition on which the life you are living in the outer world matches who you are in the inner world."

I've quit things in my life when I realized that I was on the wrong track. Sometimes things just aren't right for you. The path you are on is turning you into someone you don't want to be and become. When this path diminishes your sense of who you are as a person at an essential level it is what I call soul murder. It is time to quit.

We often use the word "corruption" to refer to dysfunctional behavior in politics and in business, but it also can be applied to one's personal life. When one is living a lie, damaging and hurting others and oneself, it is time to quit.

If you are unhappy, anxious, depressed, stressed, angry maybe it's time for a change. As they say in Alcoholic Anonymous, "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got." If you don't like what you've been getting, even if you don't know what to do, at least do something different.

One of most basic questions a human being can ask is "What would God (Higher Power, Life, Mother Nature, Cosmic Consciousness) have me do?" This is a question to be reflected on, studied, and investigated, because discerning God's will for us sometimes is crystal clear, but often a murky business. However, as St. Paul says to Timothy, "If God is with you who can be against you?" Indeed, you and God are a dynamic duo. Bringing your will into alignment with God's will for you is one of the most joyful, satisfying, fulfilling experiences in life which brings great peace and contentment.

Quitting can take great courage because it poses the risks of the unfamiliar next steps. In disappointing people you might not be any longer fulfilling their expectations and requirements, and yet, who do you listen to, all these other people or God?

The biggest things people quit are jobs, marriages, addictions, and habits to which one has become unconsciously and then consciously attached. We all are creatures of habit. Our habits make our lives more predictable and because of this predictability we feel more secure. Without our habitual ways of thinking, managing our emotions, and behaving, we feel anxious, adrift, disoriented. God, the Spirit Of Life, calls us to become our better selves. In order to become our better selves we must constantly grow and change. This requires quitting and letting go of things that no longer serve us well and facilitate our growth.

A sign of maturity and wisdom is knowing when to quit. As the bumper sticker says, "Change is inevitable. Progress is optional."

Brockporter Health Care Sunday - Health insurance now provides Brockporters breast pumps

Editor's note: Angela and I had 9 children. When Kelly was born 05/09/69 at Lakeside Hospital Angela, a mother ahead of her time, wanted to breast feed and was actively discouraged by Dr. Sansocie and the nursing staff from doing so.

In 1972 when Angela was pregnant with Colleen we switched our obstetrical care to Dr. George Walsh and The Genesee Hospital where fathers were allowed in the delivery room and they actively encouraged breast feeding. Angela and other mothers that year started the first breast feeding mother's group in Brockport, NY.

Of course when  a child is born in a city hospital they get referred to a city Pediatrician and so even though we lived in Brockport we have always gotten our health care in Rochester eschewing Lakeside because of the bad experience with their maternity and pediatric care.

 How times have changed as now breast feeding is recognized and acknowledged as superior in most cases to formula feeding. Remember when mothers would leave the hospital with their complimentary gift of formula and bottles foisted on them by formula corporations. It may seem a stretch, but the seeds of the death of Lakeside may be traced back to the formula corporations who captured Lakesides maternity and pediatric patients with what now are recognized as non-optimal care and practices, and patients who wanted better care for themselves and their children sought out that care from more progressive health care providers and institutions.
